Mustello Announces Local School District to Receive Agriculture Grant
10/27/2021
HARRISBURG – Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) today announced that a school district located in Butler County will receive a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture that will help to strengthen childhood nutrition and agricultural education.

The Butler Area School District was awarded a $15,000 Farm to School Grant which will be used to allow Future Farmers of America (FFA) students to guide kindergarten students on trips to local agricultural locations. The funds will also be used for From Our Farms to Your Arms evening events at elementary schools so that local communities can sample locally grown products.

“As a member of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee, I understand the importance of educating our youth about Pennsylvania’s top industry,” said Mustello. “Agricultural education is far more important than just an elective curriculum. Our daily needs such as food, clothing and medicine require agriculture. This industry is a significant portion of the Commonwealth’s total direct economic output. I am pleased that the Butler Area School District was awarded this grant.”

The Pennsylvania Farm to School Grant Program provides schools with funding to improve access to healthy, local foods and increase agriculture education opportunities for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The program aims to bridge the gap between children and the food system by connecting them to the fresh, healthy food available from Pennsylvania agricultural producers in their community and the surrounding areas.

“Kids who are involved in agriculture learn the value of working hard, doing a quality job and knowing that the day isn’t done until the job is done,” said Mustello.
