HARRISBURG – Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler) today issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s announcement he will lift some targeted restrictions on restaurants and other businesses, as well as increase gathering limits.
“While I am pleased that the governor has lifted some restrictions, this is too little too late,” said Mustello. “Since the COVID-19 pandemic shut our economy down one year ago, we have tried to work with the governor on safely opening up our businesses and keeping our workers off of unemployment. The governor did not meet with us and dismissed our concerns. It has now been reported that more than 500,000 jobs have been permanently lost and to add insult to injury many businesses have shut their doors for good. The loss of livelihoods could have been avoided if the governor worked with the General Assembly to develop a plan to keep our economy robust. Our economy has been compromised by Wolf’s actions.”
The governor announced today that effective April 4, restaurants may resume bar service; alcohol service will be allowed without the purchase of food; the curfew for removing alcoholic drinks from tables will be lifted; and indoor dining capacity will be raised to 75% for those restaurants that are currently self-certified and those that undergo the self-certification process.
In addition, personal services facilities, gyms and entertainment facilities will be permitted to go to 75% occupancy, and there will be a revised maximum capacity for indoor and outdoor events.
“Why wait until April 4 to lift these restrictions? Why not lift them immediately?” said Mustello. “Every day we stand by means diminished revenues for businesses and people remaining on the unemployment line. The bottom line is the governor’s relaxing of restrictions does not go far enough considering how neighboring states are opening up their economies.
“Planning and preparedness on all fronts are essential and our governor has failed in these areas. The right direction to get people back to work and businesses to move forward is for swift, decisive action through communication and transparency.”
